matsumoto castle

Matsumoto Castle is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.

Strangely, unlike most castles, it was not built on a hilltop, nor amid rivers, but in flatland.
This gave it some peculiar characteristics, among them a hidden floor that was used to trap invaders as well as small windows, and very steep stairs.

From the top floor

you can contemplate a magnificent view from the city in all directions and the mountains beyond.

The castle is an edifice of beauty – it displays both workmanship in its elegant black and white structure and functionality as a fortress to protect the inhabitants
